Mirth Consolidation

The Challenge

An Australian pathology company struggled to manage its IT systems. The company used 16 separate software setups (called Mirth instances) to connect its lab information system (LIS) with other internal and external systems. These setups were disorganized; they ran on different versions, lacked regular updates, and had no central monitoring. This disarray made the company’s IT operations complicated and hard to maintain.

Our Solution

We thoroughly reviewed their current system to identify the problems. Based on our findings, we combined all 250 connections (or channels) from the 16 separate systems into one unified platform. We set up this new system with a backup option so it would keep running during maintenance or unexpected outages. We also created separate testing environments to ensure any updates could be safely applied without disrupting daily operations. Additionally, we connected user access management (LDAP) to the company’s existing Active Directory system, which simplified access control and enhanced security.

The Outcome

By merging the 16 systems into one, the company significantly reduced the complexity and cost of managing its IT setup. The backup feature improved reliability and minimized downtime. The dedicated testing environments allowed for smoother updates and better oversight. Finally, linking user management to the existing system made handling access permissions easier, improving both efficiency and security.
In short, the company now enjoys a more reliable, secure, and user-friendly IT system.
